My Review:
So if you read my review of Shadow and Bone you will know that I did not like Mal very much. I was a little torn but overall I was not a big fan. Well the sentiment continues. I just plain don't like the dude. He doesn't deserve to be with Alina and he is kind of a boring and predictable character to begin with. Alina deserves better. I will also say I like the Darkling more than I did before, even though he is supposed to be the big bad. Kinda like the dude though. Him and Alina feel very opposites attract and while I don't want them to be together (cough cough Alina and Nikolai forever) I think that they have sort of a natural chemistry and I am interested to see where it takes them.
About the actual story: I enjoyed it more than I did Shadow and that probably has something to do with the fact that there was much less Mal in this book. Did I mention I'm not his biggest fan? But besides less Mal, Siege and Storm introduced a TON of new, extremely likeable, characters. Let me tell you, I am not disappointed in the new characters that we got.
First up, the ever lovable, Nikolai Lantsov: Also known as Sturmhond, Nikolai is the second oldest prince of Ravka and a part time pirateer. He also happens to be my new book boyfriend and him and Alina are my new favorite OTP. When they almost kissed and didn't I died. He deserves the world and I love him. He also deserves to be king and the jerk of a brother needs to get out of his way.
Next up, Tamar and Tolya: These twins are great. They use so much willpower to not kill all those rude Darkling followers before the epic betrayal, they are the new and, not even gonna try to lie, best guards for the sun summoner, and then in the end reveal that they are followers of the Apparat and believe that Alina is a saint. Like whaaaa?!?!? I didn't see it coming but they quickly became my favorite side characters.
So the new amplifier information. It seems like it is the only way to beat the Darkling, but I am also very concerned about Alina's mental health. Is she going to be able to handle a third one? She can't even handle two sometimes. Also the whole connection with the Darkling kinda freaked me out. Especially when he touched her.
The arc of this book also really took me on a journey and I think that Alina has a lot of room to grow as a character in the next book and I really, really, really hope that it is done well. There is a lot that goes down in the book and I was extremely invested in all of it. There is also a lot that needs to go down in the next book and I am extremely excited to find out about it. There are a billion lose ends, a new favorite ship, and an evil dude to deal with. What more could I ask for?
